Apple is attempting to raise the appeal of its upcoming Madison Avenue store, promising respect for the neighborhood with an earlier closing time, private shopping, and more, as the store faces opposition from area residents.
The 940 Madison Avenue Apple Retail Store is facing opposition from residents who fear that the store will disrupt the neighborhood, attracting long lines of customers, camping out for the next Apple product launch. Apple is hoping to calm these fears with assurances that the new store will be tailored to fit in with the community, according to The Wall Street Journal
“The Upper East Side store is designed to serve an important role in the neighborhood and respect the surrounding community. In this case, that means a smaller footprint, earlier closing time, and private shopping options for customers,” the company said in a statement.
Apple’s Madison Avenue retail store was first reported last year, along with a store at the World Trade Center’s transportation hub. The additions of these stores would bring the total number of Apple Retail locations in New York City to seven, joining the stores at 5th Avenue, SoHo, Grand Central Station, the Upper West Side, and West 14th Street.
