The Apple Watch has been named the top smartwatch by Consumer Reports after rigorous testing against rival devices.
Consumer Reports, a publication noted for its rigorous testing of consumer products, has named the stainless steel Apple Watch as their top smartwatch. Tested against 10 competitors, the Apple Watch held up the best under multiple tests, including usability and durability. The Apple Watch Sport performed similarly in most durability tests, but the stainless steel watch had the edge in scratch-resistance.

As part of our durability testing, we run all smartwatches through a scratch-resistance test with a series of picks calibrated to the Mohs scale, which uses 10 minerals of increasing hardness as reference points. As we’ve reported previously, the stainless-steel Apple Watch, with its sapphire crystal face, was a standout in this test. It survived a number 9 Mohs pick (just below diamond hardness) and earned an excellent score. The Apple Watch Sport with an Ion-X glass face, along with other watches sporting Gorilla Glass, scored slightly lower in this test.
Other smartwatches tested included the ASUS Zenwatch, the LG G Watch R, and the Sony SmartWatch 3.
The Apple Watch is the latest in a long line of Apple products to be put through its paces by Consumer Reports. Following the release of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus and the ensuing “bendgate” , the magazine performed an independent bending test with the new iPhones and several other devices, which found that the iPhones weren’t notably less sturdy than other flagships.
